Designers drop the triple double yew.

There are certainly many snippets in life that have become cliché — “www.” is one of them.

At the risk of over-citing what is, perhaps, my favorite source of particular design sense, I’d like to remind us (you me, the interweb at large) of Law 10: The One.

Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious, and adding the meaningful.

Well, in this day and age, the “www.” has certainly become obvious — especially to the audiences many of us will (or do) design for. And, the configuration of even the most aged server or network allows for more than one service on a machine at once.

In this day of ever shortening URL’s, tweets, and short messages, the “www.” is but a remnant of cruft from an increasingly cruft-free world.

But hey, don’t take my word for it, no-www.org sounds the horn against the triple duble yew.

This fall, Julius will be teaching a StuCo called Sketchology aimed at improving sketching skills for (mainly) industrial designers. Enrollment is already full but the class has a blog where you can see posts of people’s drawings and renderings.

Hire Me?! The Portfolio Handbook
Industrial Design seniors at DAAP, have put together this awesome book on putting together your first design portfolio. It’s a great resource for those new to creating portfolios and full of great tips and tricks for those who are more experienced.
This book is directed towards Industrial Design students, but the advice given applies to many different majors. Check it out, and recommend it to your friends.
For those who are not able to afford a copy. There is a plan in place to get these distributed for free, you might have to wait a bit. But we want this to help as many students as possible.
Also Michael Roller will be presenting this book and a bit about what he and his class learned while making the handbook, at the National IDSA conference. If you’re down in New Orleans, be sure to check out the lecture.

The Portfolio Handbook, by the ID class of ‘12 at DAAP.Preview the book here.
